The Antarctic Krill (Euphausia superba) is a small shrimp-like crustacean. Up until now Krill were harvested, transported and processed using methods that are environmentally unfriendly. Now, for the first time, new technology and environmentally-friendly methods:

prevent the death of non-krill species (birds, mammals, fish and turtles)
prevent krill decomposition and degradation
save energy by eliminating transportation of unprocessed frozen krill
prevent soil, air and water pollution by avoiding dangerous solvents
eliminate solvent residues in the final product

 

Our amazing Krill is harvested from the most pristine waters on earth, using sustainable and ecologically sound high-tech methods. The exact location is documented by GPS and the krill is siphoned under water. This prevents by-catch of birds, mammals and fish that occurs with traditional trawling. Our krill is processed directly inside the ship. This avoids decomposition caused by traditional methods of dumping the catch on board and transporting flash frozen krill thousands of miles away for processing.

Our krill oil is extracted using ethanol (grain alcohol) and water. Other producers use acetone (nail polish remover), ethyl acetate (lacquer thinner) and ethanol. Our process avoids any possibility of solvent residue in the krill oil and eliminates air and water contamination.

HARVESTING KRILL

Krill are captured beneath the surface using a siphoning tube and special screens to ensure only Krill and ocean water will enter the processing equipment inside the ship. Krill are caught by trawling and dumped on board. This results in by-catch (Fish, Mammals, Turtles and Birds are caught along with krill).

PROCESSING KRILL

Before the Krill have a chance to decompose, they are subjected to special grinding, sonic, temperature and separation techniques. This is carried out under nitrogen to prevent decomposition and oxidation of key components. The enzymes in Krill are so active they start digesting the Krill as soon as they hit the deck and die. The harvested Krill are flash-frozen and shipped thousands of miles away for processing. This results in some degradation and lower quality.

EXTRACTING KRILL OIL

The extraction process uses water and ethanol as the only solvents. Ethanol (grain alcohol) is a naturally occurring alcohol that is less toxic and more environmentally friendly than other solvents. Frozen Krill arrive thousands of miles from their home and are subjected to a patented process using ethanol (or t-butanol or 2-propanol), acetone (or other ketones) and ethyl acetate to extract the Krill Oil.
